ELDT theory is federally standardized. If a provider is FMCSA-approved and reports your completion to the Training Provider Registry (TPR), you’re set. Our online ELDT theory course is just $23 - mobile-friendly, self-paced, and reported to the TPR - so you don’t need to pay $25–$125 elsewhere.
Why ELDT exists - and what it covers
Since Feb 7, 2022, ELDT is required for first-time CDL applicants and for certain endorsements (H, P, S, N). All approved providers follow the same federal curriculum (pre-trip, basic control, hazard perception, HOS rules, cargo securement, railroad crossings/emergencies) and must report completions to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR).
Why do prices differ if the curriculum is the same?
Course prices reflect production style (video vs. text), advertising spend, and extras (e.g., job resources)—not different federal objectives. The right question isn’t “Who charges the most?” but “Who gives compliant training, smooth TPR reporting, and a good learning experience at the lowest total cost?”

ELDT theory content is standardized - so paying more rarely means getting more. Choose an approved provider that reports to the TPR and lets you learn fast on any device. With a $23 price and full compliance, ELDT Nation helps you start earning sooner—without overpaying.
Yes—if the provider is FMCSA-approved and reports completion to the Training Provider Registry (TPR). Your DMV and schools can verify TPR records.
Why do some providers charge $50–$125 for ELDT theory?
Higher prices often reflect format (video production), marketing spend, or bundled extras—not different federal curriculum. ELDT theory objectives are standardized.
Does ELDT theory include behind-the-wheel (BTW)?
No. Theory and BTW are separate. Complete online theory first, then schedule BTW with an approved provider before your skills test.
How quickly is my completion reported to the TPR?
Completions are submitted electronically by the provider. Reporting is typically near real-time or within one business day.
Can I do ELDT theory on my phone?
Yes. The course is mobile-friendly. You can study on phones, tablets, or desktop and pick up where you left off.
Is the CDL knowledge test harder if I choose a cheaper ELDT course?
No. The state exam is the same for everyone. Success depends on preparation quality, not course price. Look for clear modules and frequent quizzes.
Are there hidden fees or subscriptions?
No. You pay once for ELDT theory access and reporting. There are no monthly subscriptions or add-on charges for your completion certificate.
Which endorsements tend to pay more?
HazMat (H/X), Tanker (N), and Doubles/Triples (T) often lead to higher-paying freight. Actual pay varies by region, carrier, and your safety record.
