If you're getting a CDL, completing the FMCSA's ELDT theory curriculum is now mandatory. But what does it actually include—and how do you fulfill the requirement?
Let’s break it down.
WHAT IS ELDT?
ELDT stands for Entry-Level Driver Training, a federal requirement that applies to anyone seeking a:
- Class A or Class B CDL
- School Bus (S), Passenger (P), or Hazmat (H) endorsement
As of February 7, 2022, you must complete ELDT before taking your skills or endorsement exam.

WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED?
The theory portion includes classroom or online learning that covers:
- Basic Vehicle Control
- Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections
- Safe Backing, Turning, and Shifting
- Hazard Perception & Distracted Driving
- Hours of Service & Driver Fatigue
- Cargo Securement
- Vehicle Systems & Reporting Malfunctions
- Emergency Maneuvers & Skid Recovery
Once completed, your results are electronically reported to the FMCSA, making you eligible to take your road or endorsement test.
